Federicu II (1194 - 1250)Frederick II was born in 1194 in Palermo and became king at the age of three and a half in May 1198 when his father Henry VI died. His mother Constance died six months later. Sicily was then governed by a Council of Regents she had established under the care of Pope Innocent III. Frederick II attracted poets, writers and artists to his court in Palermo. The Sicilian School flourished during his reign in the first half of the 1200s. The period is referred to as the Duecento.
Poi che to piace, Amore, che eo deggia tovare (poetare), faronne mia possanza ch'io vegna a compimento. Dat'aggio lo meo core in voi, madonna, amare, e tutta mia speranza in vostro piacimento. Misura, providenzia e meritanza Misura, providenzia e meritanza fanno esser l'uomo sagio e conoscente e ogni nobiltā bon sen[n]'avanza e ciascuna ric[c]heza fa prudente. Nč di ric[c]heze aver grande abundanza faria l'omo ch'č vile esser valente, ma della ordinata costumanza discende gentileza fra la gente. Omo ch'č posto in alto signoragio e in riccheze abunda, tosto scende, credendo fermo stare in signoria. Unde non salti troppo omo ch'č sagio, per grande alteze che ventura prende, ma tut[t]ora mantegna cortesia.
